A Dream Office For Realtors

What do REALTORS Really Want?

The Suprising Survey Results from Maryland REALTORS

A few weeks ago, I started on this project to find out what real estate agents hated in their current companies - and what would really make them happy. To be honest, I was pretty sure I had already heard it all. But I was wrong.

Last week, I told you the things agents said their brokers had done to tick them off. Nothing could have prepared me for some of the stories I heard. This week, I'm sharing the things an agent dreams for in an office. I was equally shocked.

The Dirty Little Secrets Agents Hide

I asked you to tell me "what do you look for in your dream real estate office?" I even gave suggestions that I hoped would bring out really "crazy" demands: designated parking, Starbucks Coffee delivered every day... you name it. To be honest, I didn't get any pie-in-the-sky at all. No catered lunches, no valet parking, no happy hours every day.

So, what is it that agents secretly want in their dream office?

The answers surprised even me. Here is what the agents requested most often:

  • A friendly, competent staff
  • Getting paid on time - no holding checks
  • Support from the Broker - who should be a leader
  • Support from management - who works and isn't lazy
  • Working equipment
  • No hidden fees so there are no surprises when the checks come
  • Everyone treated fairly (no office politics!)
  • A Broker who can lead and stand up for his agents (we've seen that on this list before!)
  • A Broker who is knowledgeable - and who knows at least as much as the agents working for him
  • Tools and technology
  • 100% of leads given out to the office, not just to the favorites
  • Not letting just any agent join the company (be exclusive!)
  • Training, training, training! (Heard that MANY times!)
  • Starbucks coffee (ok - there was ONE little luxury there!)

The Truth is Simple - So Simple that Most Brokers Overlook It

When I saw the wish list agents submitted, I couldn't believe how simple the requests were! Agents don't really want a lot after all. It looks to me like agents just want a nice place to work, with competent staff, working equipment, leadership and training... and most of all, respect.

Want proof? Here are some actual quotes:

  • "What I want is to be able to work and be appreciated once in a while"
  • "Saying thanks for a job well done"
  • "Everyone treated the same"
  • "We need up-to-date computers, faxes and printers"
  • "Good, productive agents that support each other and are not cutthroat"
  • "Training and fewer 2nd rate agents"
  • "Training and not just letting any licensed agent join the firm"
  • "A cooperative, friendly office atmosphere where the owners/managers know more about real estate and the latest changes than I do."
  • "Starbucks coffee would be nice!"
